 OUR HISTORY

After the Second World War there was a fervent activity for the reconstruction of Italy. Nevertheless little attention was paid to those composers whose creative talent and dedication helped Italy regain international consideration and confirmed a never faded musical tradition.

In those years a group of farseeing composers and songwriters invested their time to found U.N.C.L.A., an association for the protection of rights, which is today renowned in Italy and abroad.

The benefits and advantages of today's composers/songwriters are the achievements of those farseeing colleagues.

Composers and songwriters today owe a debt of gratitude to them for their work.

It is now important to consider the situation of popular music in Italy in the years preceding and following the Second World War, and to see what relevance composers and songwriters had at that time.

Since the relationship between author and publisher was not regulated by the law, rules were mainly made by the publishers. Composers and songwriters did not have a representative voice at the RAI (called EIAR at that time). Thus they could not join in debate on important issues such as Providence and Healthcare Assistance; these were unrealistic goals for them. Their relationship with S.I.A.E. was almost non-existent. Only later on, due to an internal reform, important offices were held by composers/songwriters as well as publishers. Those offices were Chairman, Members of Assembly, Boards of directors and Deputy of department. The assignment of each office was through free election, one for the composers to elect their representatives and one for the publishers to elect theirs.

U.N.C.L.A. candidates have always been victorious in elections since that time.

It may be that today's young stars of the Italian pop music scene are unaware of the names of U.N.C.L.A. founders and of the obstacles and prejudice theyhad to overcome in order to raise enough adhesions to establish U.N.C.L.A. as a nationwide organization and to achieve fairlegal rights.

After its foundation, U.N.C.L.A. has consistently been represented, through its members, in the following associations:

S.I.A.E. in executive offices such as: Chairman, Board of Directors, Deputies of Departments (Music, Opera, D.O.R, Cinema ), Board of Auditors.

SOLIDARITY FUND among associates and members of the S.I.A.E.: Management Committee, Board of Auditors

B.I.E.M.: Board of Directors and Assembly

C.I.S.A.C.: Board of Directors and Assembly.

U.N.C.L.A.
always welcomes those who could help with their constructive criticism, but also those able to offer regular and helpful services, in support not just of their own interests but also of those of the entire Guild.
